WHAT IF?

-

 This Christmas, what if…

• Instead of grumbling about those who no longer say “Merry Christmas,” we demonstrated to them the reason for our joy?

• Instead of looking at others through the lens of “us” and “them,” we remembered that we are ALL sinners in need of God’s grace?

• Instead of complaining about the state of our nation/world, we took action by sharing more freely about the King of Nations, the Light of the World?

• Instead of whining about the high price of goods, we thanked Jehovah Jireh, the Provider, for all He has given us? 

• Instead of living in fear, we chose to trust our Creator who came to earth to save us?

• Instead of dwelling in despair, we determine to abide in Hope?

• Instead of counting Christmas gifts under the tree (or lack thereof), we worshipped the Gift Giver, Jesus Christ, Messiah, the tiny baby in a manger who came to Earth to die on the cross, God in the flesh, Emmanuel, God With Us? 

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great JOY which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:10-11

I was delighted and honored to be asked to play the flute for my dear friend Margaret’s wedding to her wonderful new husband, John. The plan was for me to perform a selection of songs starting about ten minutes before the ceremony and continuing through the time when our pastor, the groom, and the groom’s family made their entrance. The day was lovely with a few puffy clouds and moderate temperatures. However, I was a bit concerned with the reasonably strong breeze as the whole event was to take place outside. Knowing from past experiences that my sheet music would be prone to blow away or at the very least flip to the next page before I was finished with the current one, I put each page in a plastic sleeve in a notebook, and at the last minute I also asked a friend to hold and turn the pages for me if it became evident that it was a problem. I TRUST IN THE NAME OF THE LORD

Some trust in chariots and some in horses,  but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.   Psalm 20:7 I was recently in a conversation with a godly man, a friend I highly respect. He also happens to be a retired homicide detective. We were discussing the use of firearms for self-protection. That conversation WAS NOT, and this post IS NOT, about the right to carry firearms, one of the hot political topics of our times. For the record, I do strongly support the right of citizens to carry arms, and God bless those of you who do, especially with the intent of protecting loved ones or other innocents, but I just as strongly believe that many of us should not own guns. My friend gave the following wise criteria for self-determination about having a firearm for protection, and I thought it was worth sharing:   1. BROWN MANGOS AND BLESSED HOPE

My husband spoils me rotten. There, I’ve publicly confessed it, so now may I move on with this post? 😅 This morning, he was cutting up a mango for my breakfast, and was disgruntled to discover that it had ugly brown spots on the inside. Out of curiosity, I Googled for information about why fruit that looks perfectly good on the outside turns out to be brown on the inside. I won’t bore you with the scientific reasons, but please feel free to do research on your own if you’re interested. Of course, I was also disappointed along with John. But you know what? I choose to be thankful that more often than not, I get to eat wonderful, unblemished mangos! Many times in life we find people or situations like that. They look so beautiful and appealing on the surface, but when we look deeper, we find rottenness. Or we believe ourselves to be “good” people, but bad things happen in our lives.
